VDRL Test

What is the VDRL Test?

The VDRL test is tests that determine whether the bacterium that causes syphilis, commonly known as syphilis, has had contact with the body. This test is performed when various symptoms are observed in patients with such a risk.

Since it is a sexually transmitted disease, VDRL also means the study of venereal diseases. The bacteria that cause this disease are transmitted from person to person along with sexual intercourse.

The bacterium causes a wound to open in the infected person after a short time. This wound is a skin wound in the sexual area. In addition, rashes on the skin also spread to other parts of the body. A VDRL test is recommended when such symptoms are observed.

How is the VDRL Test Performed?

Symptoms such as rashes on the skin, weakness, dizziness and loss of appetite are signs of the progression of the disease. Without waiting for them, the patient should consult a doctor for a VDRL test when the first wound is seen.

The test can be performed at any time of the day on an empty or full stomach. The patient’s vascular tract is opened and some blood is taken. After the blood taken is examined in the microbiology laboratory, it is understood whether the patient has come into contact with bacteria.

What Does it Mean If the VDRL Test Is Positive?

If the test result is positive, it means that the patient has come into contact with the bacterium and has contracted syphilis. Syphilis is a disease that can be treated in a shorter time with early diagnosis, as with every other disease. If the test result is positive, the doctor immediately begins a course of antibiotics. Although very rare, there is also a possibility that the test will turn out to be incorrect.

In What Cases Does a False Positive VDRL Test Occur?

The VDRL test performed to diagnose syphilis may be mistakenly positive in some cases, although it is rare. This condition can occur in patients with tissue damage, even if they have not come into contact with the bacterium, or due to the influence of other factors. When something like this happens, the doctor may want to repeat the test or perform different tests as well.

How Are Patients Who Have a Positive VDRL Test Treated?

Syphilis has been a feared ailment since it began to appear for the first time in history. But when penicillin was found, the problem was largely solved.

The medications that the doctor will recommend for the treatment of syphilis vary depending on what stage of the disease has reached. In general, the most effective antibiotic for this disease is penicillin. For bodies that are sensitive to penicillin, different antibiotics are recommended.

For the initial stages of the disease, penicillin treatment, which usually starts once a week, lasts about a month. In cases where it is advanced, penicillin is given intravenously. If the VDRL test is positive, treatment should be started immediately.
